About the Deborah Abel Dance Company
The Deborah Abel Dance Company performs original works choreographed by artistic director Deborah Abel which engage the audience in a very human, soulful, and concretely emotional way. It is meant to remind us of a level of connection with ourselves, others and the divine that gets buried in everyday life, and which the arts are uniquely qualified to uncover. The work is aimed at the part of us that is longing: longing to be the lover and the beloved, longing for connection with our truest selves and with others. Through a ecumenical perspective that is a meld of western views of love and human relationships and eastern bhakti philosophy, the dances explore the possibility of personal wholeness, and of deep, loving partnerships, families, and communities. Each concert is conceived as a whole, creating a universe into which the audience is invited to enter. Working with a group of talented instrumentalists and vocalists the company’s resident composer, Lee Perlman, collaborates to create original works of live music, which evolve in conversation with the choreography. Abel’s work has been described as “…a confluence of broad strokes …and telling details …; the lyricism and technical acuity of Jose Limon; the primordial thrust of Martha Graham; the sculptural peregrinations of Pilobolus. And infusing it all is a sense of breath powerful as the butoh concept of (to quote Sankai Juku founder Ushio Amagatsu) ‘inward wind’-an internal force…” The BostonPhoenix

The Deborah Abel Dance Company Tour of India
December 2012
The Deborah Abel Dance Company has been invited to perform in three locations in India, and to participate in dance and cultural exchanges in cities and rural villages. We have funding from Indian and American organizations, but we have a long way to go in raising the money to get all the dancers and musicians over to India. We won't be able get there without your generous tax-deductible donation! Thank you for your help!
